Son of 'Tarzan' actor Ron Ely allegedly killed his mother before deputies shot and killed him, sheriff's office says. Valerie Lundeen Ely, 62, was stabbed to death at the home she shared with her husband by her 30-year-old son Cameron Ely, the sheriff's department said.
Officers called to the Santa Barbara house found Valerie Lundeen Ely, 62, dead with "multiple stab wounds". Authorities said police cornered 30-year-old Cameron Ely outside the home, deemed him a threat and shot him dead.
"Deputies searched the residence and surrounding area for Cameron Ely. During the search, the suspect was located outside the home," Zick said. "He posed a threat and in response 4 deputies fired their service weapons at the suspect, fatally wounding him."
Cameron Ely attended Phillips Exeter Academy in New Hampshire and went on to Harvard University in 2007 where he played quarterback for the football team. Records show that he was licensed as a security guard the past two years.
None of the deputies were injured. Those involved in the shooting will be placed on paid administrative leave pending an investigation, the sheriff's office said.
Police are investigating the death as a homicide, according to the statement, adding that autopsies are being conducted for "both the victim and the suspect."
Valerie Lundeen Ely was a former beauty pageant queen who was Miss Florida in 1981. She and Ron Ely had three children together. Ron Ely, 81, starred in a 1960s TV version of the Tarzan story.
