President Trump is in Chicago Monday to speak at the International Association of Chiefs of Police Annual Conference and to hold a fundraiser at his hotel there.
Trump is scheduled to attend a fundraiser Monday morning hosted by Todd Ricketts, Cubs co-owner and Republican National Committee Finance chairman. Later, he will speak at the largest annual gathering of law enforcement leaders in the world, the International Association of Chiefs of Police Conference.
The city's mayor, Lori Lightfoot, also refuses to meet with Trump. She's criticized him in the past for proposing a rule that would allow federal contractors to make employment decisions based on religious convictions, and she's pushed back against tweets from the president's daughter Ivanka Trump about the city's gun violence.
Trump doesn’t wait for an answer. He doesn’t want an answer, batting away any reality in conflict with the comic-book Midwest Gotham City of his imagination.
“After pickets Monday, the CTU has not planned any afternoon activity,” union leaders told members in an email overnight. “Feel free to rest or take part in any productive activity of your choosing. We have heard that President Donald Trump might be in town. If any members were inclined to show up outside his fundraiser in red, that would qualify as productive, in our view.”
Kevin Graham, president of the Chicago's FOP, called Johnson's boycott an "insult" to the president. "I think Superintendent Johnson should not walk out of the president's speech, particularly when the federal government has sent federal agents and prosecutors to assist the Chicago Police Department with our gun and drug problems," Graham said.
The trip comes a day after Mr. Trump announced the death of ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi. Mr. Trump described the U.S. operation in Syria, during which the ruthless terrorist "died like a dog," as the president told reporters in what turned into a small press conference in the White House Diplomatic Room.
The Chicago Police Department is expecting 20,000 protesters trying to put a damper on President Trump's first visit to the city as the nation's chief executive. A noon demonstration is planned outside his hotel on the Chicago River, when the president will be present for a fundraising lunch and roundtable with supporters, according to his schedule.
