At least 5 people were injured in a shooting rampage Thursday at a California high school and a suspect was taken into custody authorities in Los Angeles County said.
The shooting was reported at the campus at 21900 Centurion Way about 7:40 a.m., prompting a massive law enforcement response. Paramedics treated the wounded at the school while authorities searched for a 15-year-old boy suspected in the shooting.
Denzel Abesamis, a senior at Saugus High School, was about to make a turn into campus when he saw classmates running out. “I automatically made a detour to leave because I knew something bad happened,” he said in a text message.
Five victims were being transported to Henry Mayo Hospital, which says that three of them two males and one female were in critical condition. Another male patient was in good condition and a fifth patient was still en route, according to the hospital.
The shooter had been described as a "male Asian suspect" wearing black clothing who was last seen walking away from the scene, the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Office said. He was believed to be a student at the school, NBCLA reported. A weapon was recovered at the scene, but it wasn't immediately clear what type it was or if the shooter had used more than one weapon during the attack, The New York Times reported.
Los Angeles County Sheriff Alex Villanueva tweeted that the suspect was in custody and being treated at a local hospital. The nearby Henry Mayo Hospital said one female and two male patients were in critical condition and one male was in good condition.
Television footage showed a chaotic scene at the high school, with teenagers walking in a line behind armed law enforcement officials with their arms raised in the air.
The shooting prompted a lockdown order for nearby elementary elementary schools. A broader lockdown was ordered for the entire William S. Hart Union School District, but that was later rescinded.
