LEGO announces the arrival of Batman’s 1989 Batmobile to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Iconic film. The 3,306 piece set will run you $249.99 and comes with a rotating stand, three new minifigures, and a variety of features on the vehicle itself.
At 3,306 pieces, the Burton Batmobile (or the “1989 Batmobile” as Lego refers to it) is less than half the piece count of Lego’s UCS Millennium Falcon, and almost 1,500 pieces smaller than the recently released UCS Imperial Star Destroyer. But at 23 inches long it still feels massive, and every time I pick it up I use as much care as I would hoisting a toddler.

Batman himself turns 80 this year, and Tim Burton’s Batman turns 30. It’s the perfect time for LEGO to honor the ground-breaking incarnation that showed what superhero epics could become on the big screen. Equally perfect: LEGO Jack Nicholson! Toys of Nicholson as the Joker remain in scarce supply due to the actor’s exorbitant licensing fees, but a stylized LEGO minifig doesn’t count as an actor likeness. Vicki Vale toys, as far as I know, are non-existent; this might include the first one.
If you’ll recall, Burton’s rendition of the Batmobile upended conventional wisdom of exactly what that vehicle could look like, transforming a onetime kitschy set of wheels into a menacing but sleek mode of transportation that was as stealthy as it was deadly.
The highlights don’t end there as the replica has a number of authentic details from the movie. These include hidden machine guns, that pop up from the under the hood when you turn the exhaust turbine.
There’s a fully detailed cockpit inside as well, with lots of levers, foot pedals, and a stickered dashboard covered in gauges and buttons. The steering wheel can even be used to turn the Batmobile’s front wheels although it’s tight quarters in there, and squeezing your hand into the cockpit to reach the wheel is a bit of a challenge. Lego’s designers have also included the Batmobile’s pop-up machine guns, which are deployed and retracted by rotating the turbine exhaust on the back of the car.
This LEGO® Batman™ model car kit for adults includes over 3,300 pieces and makes a wonderful nostalgic holiday gift or birthday present for any Batman fan.
1989 Batmobile™ measures over 4” (12cm) high, 23” (60cm) long and 8” (22cm) wide.
