Rapper Kodak Black was sentenced Wednesday to more than three years in federal prison after pleading guilty to weapons charges stemming from his arrest just before a scheduled concert performance in May.
Black was able to obtain three of the weapons: a 9 mm handgun, a .380-caliber handgun and a semi-automatic Mini Draco weapon. Authorities said one of the guns was found at the scene of a March shooting in Pompano Beach, although he has not been charged in that case.
Kodak Black has had his fair share of legal troubles, and the rapper has been on the inside before calling a prison cell his home in the past. He has gotten many chances to turn a new leaf, but he continues to dig himself deeper and deeper into a ditch. He is quite a controversial figure in music, and many of his fans now abhor him.
This is largely due to his criminal activities and his unfiltered mouth, as he is well known for saying anything no matter how crude it is and posting it on social media. He came under massive attack earlier this year for his out of pocket statement to actress Lauren London after her boyfriend rapper Nipsey Hussle passed away.
Black also faces drug, weapons and sexual assault charges in other states that remain pending. He has had several previous arrests.
Kodak, whose real name is Bill Kapri, was denied bond, despite arguing that the guns had been purchased for self-defense after receiving death threats from gang members, even going as far as purchasing an armored Cadillac Escalade. Kodak still faces a 30-year sentence if convicted on the South Carolina sex charges, while his current stint in jail has also been troubled; according to prosecutors he’d beat up a prison guard while awaiting trial. In September, he released a statement from jail, blaming his current predicament on being “young, rich, and coming up out of the projects.”
“I’m sorry for the actions that led me to where I’m standing,” said Black, handcuffed. “I do take full responsibility for my mishap.”
During his time in jail, we can only hope Kodak will reflect on all his legal woes as he currently has a pending case for sexual misconduct in Carolina. Maybe this will be the push to turn his life around.
