The iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max may have launched September 10, 2019 but Apple couldn't bring itself to putting out an iPhone SE 2 to land alongside them. Apple might be working on a sequel to its popular iPhone SE and today we want to walk you through some reasons why you should, and shouldn’t, wait for the rumored iPhone SE 2. Until September 2018 the iPhone SE was available in 32GB and 128GB versions. In the UK the 32GB model cost £379; 128GB was £479. (For comparison, in the US the iPhone SE cost $399 for 32GB and $449 for 129GB.)
This means the iPhone SE 2 could become a very appealing purchase from a pricing perspective, albeit as far as the hardware goes, there will be some substantial changes versus the more premium siblings. It would be reasonable to expect the iPhone SE 2 to be similarly priced when (and if) it launches. We also anticipate that when it does arrive it will replace the iPhone 8. The iPhone SE 2 would be a 'true' budget alternative to the high-end iPhones, more so than the iPhone XR was, with downgraded specs from other devices but with a much lower price tag too.
This will be the case on the iPhone SE 2 as well, as the device will come with Apple’s A13 chip, the same currently offered on the iPhone 11 family, but only with 3GB RAM, down from 4GB on the more premium models. A single-lens camera is also expected, just like on the original iPhone 8. Another report claimed that the SE 2 would launch in India prior to launching in other territories. This sounds dubious to us, although it might fit with Apple's plans to offer a cheaper handset to certain territories (normally Apple does this by offering an older version of the iPhone to certain countries).
Apple has been losing market share recently and that’s likely in part because of the prohibitively high price of most of its phones. By launching an iPhone SE 2 the company would give buyers a more affordable option, and by launching it around six months after the iPhone 11 range it should arrive just as sales are starting to slow.
The analyst says iPhone SE 2 is very likely to become a highly-successful model, and 2020 sales estimates are currently at 30 million units. The iPhone SE was available in silver, gold, Space Grey and Rose Gold options. The iPhone SE 2 is likely to be available in silver, gold, and Space Grey - like the iPhone 8.
The original iPhone SE launched at $399 (£379, AU$679) for the 16GB variant. We'd expect the iPhone SE 2 to cost at least as much, and a price rise is likely, but it should still be cheap relative to the rest of Apple's range, undercutting even the $799 / £799 / AU$1299 iPhone 11.
