National Cat Day is Oct. 29, and there are any number of purr-fect ways to celebrate this holiday in Orlando. The day is intended to help bring awareness to save the lives of the millions of cats and kittens who are abandoned or surrendered to a shelter.
The day also reminds us that neutering and spaying our furry companions helps to reduce the population. Cats are some of the most amazing companions. If you don’t have one, consider adopting a cat from a local shelter.
Roughly a decade back, I rescued a stray kitten that was found outside by a college acquaintance. At first, the kitten who I named Finn was a little standoffish and territorial. In my head, I figured she was just being a cat. But these days, she and I have built up a routine. On the days when my daughter is off at preschool, Finn comes upstairs and hangs out by the windowsill. She knows that it’s her time to bond with me. Obviously, we speak no words. We just know that every other day, it’s our time to hang out without anyone else getting in the way.
Central Florida’s original cat cafe may seem like a bit of a hike for those living closer to Orlando, but it’s worth the drive for some feline friendship. The Orlando Cat Cafe, located in Clermont, features bites and coffee from Axum Coffee alongside cats. Visitors can take their food and drink into the cat room for kitten playtime ($8 per hour).
These moments made me realize that it’s really important to bond with your cat. Even little gestures mean a great deal to them. Here are some other fun methods that’ll be beneficial to both of you. Just remember that even if they don’t openly show their appreciation of you the way your dog might, it’s still there.
Adopt a local kitten Though the area’s two cat cafes both have adoptable kittens, Orlando has dozens of shelters with loving felines in search of their “furever” homes.
