The Miami Dolphins have traded Kenyan Drake to the Arizona Cardinals for a conditional 2020 draft pick, the Miami Herald has confirmed. Miami Dolphins finally trade Kenyan Drake as team continues to stockpile draft picks.
On Monday morning, the Cardinals addressed their shorthanded backfield by acquiring Kenyan Drake from the Miami Dolphins in exchange for a 2020 conditional sixth-round draft pick, per ESPN’s Adam Schefter. The pick can become a fifth-round pick if the conditions of the deal are met.
The Cardinals are in need of a running back because the top two backs on their depth chart, David Johnson and Chase Edmonds, are both dealing with injuries. But it’s somewhat surprising that the last-place Cardinals are trading for a player who becomes a free agent after the season. Trades like this are usually made by teams fighting for a playoff berth. Perhaps the Cardinals think they can go on a late-season run.
Drake will be remembered in Miami for scoring one of the most memorable touchdowns in Dolphins history, an improbable 69-yard score that needed one hook and two lateral plays to beat the New England Patriots, 24-23, at Hard Rock Stadium on Dec. 9, 2018.
The Cardinals are dealing with injuries to David Johnson and Chase Edmonds, meaning Alfred Morris and Zach Zenner were the only remaining healthy running backs. Now, they will add Drake to the backfield with a difficult matchup ahead on Thursday night against the 7-0 49ers.
It’s an interesting deal for a Cardinals’ team not viewed as a contender in a logjammed NFC West. Currently in the division basement, Arizona’s trade for Drake isn’t one made with the future in mind.
But Drake, who is set to become a free agent next offseason, was never truly embraced by either of the Dolphins’ last two coaching staffs. Time and again, he had been passed over for playing time, including by Arian Foster, Jay Ajayi, Frank Gore and most recently Mark Walton and Kalen Ballage.
Drake has 348 total yards this season split evenly between 47 rushes and 22 receptions for the tanking Dolphins. Miami has also traded away receiver Kenny Stills, offensive lineman Laremy Tunsil (both to the Texans) and safety Minkah Fitzpatrick (Steelers).
Assuming David Johnson is healthy enough to play the rest of the 2019 season, Kenyan Drake would provide a perfect complement to Johnson’s power running ability. Drake is a shifty back who can break off long runs with his downfield speed.
Drake, a former third-round pick in 2016, had been the subject of the latest Dolphins trade rumors during the past week. He was in the final year of his rookie contract and will be an unrestricted free agent after this season.
