Former University of Miami football coach Mark Richt, 59, posted on Twitter late Monday morning that he suffered a heart attack, but is “doing fine.” Richt announced on Twitter that he had a heart attack but is ready to return to work
“I am assuming word travels fast, so I wanted to be able to inform everyone that I did have a heart attack this morning. I am doing fine,” Richt wrote. “As I went through the experience I had peace knowing I was going to heaven, but I was going to miss my wife. I plan to be at work this week.”
Richt, 59, currently works as a college football analyst for the ACC Network and ESPN. He retired from coaching in December 2018 after leading Miami's program for three seasons, where the Hurricanes went 26–13. Richt also played as a quarterback at Miami from 1978-82.
Richt was fired at Georgia in 2015 after a 15-year run and contemplated taking time off from coaching. Instead, he went to his alma mater for three seasons before retiring in December of 2018.
Richt, who previously coached at Georgia, guided the Hurricanes to a No. 2 ranking and Orange Bowl appearance during his three-year tenure in Coral Gables, where current Miami head coach Manny Diaz served as his defensive coordinator.
"Long story short, I really didn't do a great job taking care of myself physically. You can get into a grind of the job. I've coached, I guess, over 30 years," Richt said. "When I left Georgia after 15 years as head coach, I probably could have used a little decompression break at that time or at least considered it."
Richt was the head coach of the Miami Hurricanes until his retirement in 2018.
