Google Pixel 4 and Pixel 4 XL just announced for $800 Google on Tuesday unveiled its new flagship smartphone, the Pixel 4. The Pixel 4 phones have a design that harks back to the Pixel 2, except for a revamped rear camera. It will come in two sizes standard and XL and three colors: black, white, or a limited-edition bright orange.
The Pixel 4 starts at $799, and the Pixel 4 XL starts at $899. It's available to preorder on Tuesday and will be widely available on October 24.
Usually, you get one or two new pieces of technology in a new phone. With the Pixel 4, Google is trying to nail four new innovations at once: face unlock, a high refresh rate screen, a faster Google Assistant, and spatial awareness using radar. It also is introducing a new design language that’s a departure not only from previous phones, but from any hardware Google makes.
While it's Google's turn to take the phone spotlight, the 2019 stage is already full of new competitors, including Apple's iPhone 11 and 11 Pro and Samsung's Galaxy Note 10 and relaunched Galaxy Fold. The iPhone 11 and Galaxy S10E are two of the better-matched rivals to the Pixel 4 and both are $100 cheaper. Then there's the OnePlus 7 Pro, which packs a 90Hz screen like the Pixel 4 but costs $130 less. And of course there are last year's Pixel 3 phones, which Google has chopped $300 off.
Details about the new smartphone didn't come as a big surprise: Gadget blogs and even Google (GOOG) itself have teased so many photos and videos and details about the Pixel 4 that one prominent tech publication called it "the most-leaked phone ever." The company has been working overtime to generate buzz for its Pixel line, which holds less than 1% of the global smartphone market, according to IDC's worldwide quarterly mobile phone tracker. Even so, itt has generated a cult-like following over the years.
