Until 1970, the day was celebrated on Oct 12, no matter which day of the week it occurred. But after 1970, the holiday was fixed to the second Monday in October in keeping with the Uniform Monday Holiday Act that placed the observance of certain holidays on Mondays.
In Hawaii, the holiday is known as "Discoverers' Day." In California and South Dakota, it's "Native Americans' Day." In Minnesota, Vermont, Oregon, Maine and Alaska, it's "Indigenous People's Day," the New York Times reports.
Today is the federal holiday of Columbus Day, which means many things will be closed. County, federal, and state offices are closed, but the Butler City Building is open today. Many schools are closed, as well as post offices and banks.

- ABC Stores are open.
- Stock markets (New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq) are open.
