Canada election Justin Trudeau wins Canada's general election

Justin Trudeau's Liberal Party has retained power in a narrow Canadian election win, but he will now be prime minister of a minority government. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s Liberal Party has won the 2019 Canadian federal election, according to a projection from the Canadian Broadcasting Company (CBC).

"It's not quite the same as 2015. It's not all owing to the leader," said Robert Bothwell, a professor of Canadian history and international relations at the University of Toronto. "Trudeau is prime minister because the rest of the party was able to pull itself together and prevail. While Trudeau certainly deserves credit for what has happened he's really going to have to demonstrate qualities that he hasn't yet shown."

Trudeau, the Liberal leader, and Conservative leader Andrew Scheer were the two top contenders in Monday's competitive general election. More than 300 parliamentary seats were up for grabs. Health care, the climate crisis and the cost of living reportedly are voters' top issues.
Canadian elections, like American elections, are a first-past-the-post system — meaning the country is divided into different legislative districts, called ridings, and whichever candidate gets the most vote in a riding wins. However, Canada is a parliamentary system, meaning Canadians don’t directly elect their prime minister — control of the executive is determined by which party can win the most support in parliament.

Trudeau, 47, picked up a key endorsement last week from former President Barack Obama but the Prime Minister has faced a difficult campaign after revelations that he wore blackface in the past. He said he didn't know how many times he put the racist makeup on.

Mr Trudeau swept into power in 2015 promising "real change" and a slew of progressive pledges. But after four years in power, Mr Trudeau faced criticism for his ability to follow through.

President Donald Trump congratulated Trudeau in a tweet early Tuesday morning on his "wonderful and hard fought victory."
