Apple announces AirPods Pro with noise cancellation, coming October 30th. As rumored, updated new accessory features an all new-design with an AirPods-style shape and silicone ear tips to support active noise cancellation technology, along with a $249 price point.
Apple has built microphones into the AirPods Pro that detect external sound, and the earbuds then cancel it out. The system used here sounds very similar to the noise cancellation in the new Beats Solo Pro headphones, just miniaturized to a much smaller form factor. Apple says noise cancellation is adjusted up to 200 times per second.
Another important new AirPods Pro feature is the inclusion of active noise cancellation, which uses microphones on the outside of the earbuds to analyze distracting sounds, before piping in an equivalent “anti-noise” through the AirPods Pro’s audio drivers, something Apple says the AirPods Pro do up to 200 times a second.
Apple says the AirPods Pro offer "superior sound quality" with audio feature called Adaptive EQ. According to the company, the tool "automatically tunes" low and mid-range frequencies to suit each person's ears. There's also an amplifier on board for "pure, incredibly clear sound" and extended battery life. Apple says the drivers inside the AirPods Pro can produce bass down to 20Hz to round out the "immersive" audio quality. To help you find the right fit, there's an Ear Tip Fit Test that examines the seal for each ear to determine with size tip will be best for you.
Apple has designed an Ear Tip Fit Test to make sure that users get the best audio experience. After putting the AirPods Pro in each ear, Apple's software will leverage the built-in microphones to measure the sound level in the ear and compare it to what's coming from the speaker driver. Apple says that in just seconds, its algorithm will be able to tell whether the ear tip is the right size and has a good fit or should be adjusted for a better seal.
To achieve Active Noise Cancellation on the new AirPods Pro, Apple is using two microphones combined with “advanced software” to continuously adapt to background noise. There’s also Transparency mode, which allows users to “simultaneously listen to music while still hearing the environment around them.”
You can switch between active noise cancellation and something called Transparency mode in order to block background noise or let background noise go through your earbuds. You can control that from your device or squeeze the bottom of the earbuds between your fingertips.
